Malawi Monday #1; Settling in

We are currently living in Lilongwe, Malawi. I am thinking of making this part of a series in which I share our experience about life here. If there is anything that you would like to know about Malawi, please feel free to post your question in the comments. We would love to do the research on your behalf. Please keep it family friendly though.

As a homeschooling family it seems easier to me to pack up and leave. It might just be my perspective but within 3 months of Adventurer 2 receiving the offer, we find ourselves in our new home. Furnished with the necessities and daily reminders of the uniqueness of this part of God’s creation.

Barely a day in this new country we already sowed some carrot seeds, started learning the local language and came face to face with the challenge of adapting to the local currency and difference in food available. I’ll write on these a little later.

Mid week, Adventurer 4 asked if we can’t pretty please start with school. This would be music in any homeschool mommy’s ears but lets just say, the tune sounded a bit off for this homeschool mama. But so we started that too with limited resources. We are making do with what I could pack into our suitcases and we have to wait with patience and composure for our belongings to come out of storage about 3 months from now.

As part of Adventurer 2’s perks here, we are now club members at the Sunbird Capital Hotel here in Lilongwe. Every night after work we all go for a swim or gym which is definitely a highlight in our day. Adventurer 2 will be joining a ‘boot camp’ at the gym twice a week but I choose to enjoy the leisure of splashing in the water with Adventurer 4 and Adventurer 5.

We’ve slowly settled into a new, peaceful routine with some vegetable gardening, housekeeping and loads of free time.

From day 1 or 2 we’ve been learning Chichewa, the local tongue, and are speaking short phrases already. The weather is also very new to us and as a way to see the positive in it, we made a weather tree similar to se7en’s in which Adventurer 5 colours the suitable colour. {sorry for the very bad pic!}

That’s it for now. I’ll try to post a snippet every Monday for a while about this new adventure we’ve embarked on. Once more, if there is anything you would like to know about Malawi and life here, please feel free to ask your question in the comments below. We would love to do the research on your behalf as long as it’s family friendly!

Thanks for visiting until next time!
